How To Make Arepas Recipe | Venezuelan Arepas Recipe

Arepas is a type of dish which is made up of ground maize dough It is generally originated from the northern side of South America. It is one of the main cuisines of Colombia and Venezuela. Those you believe in a Gluten-Free diet or Low Sodium/Heart Healthy Diet, the arepa is a good alternative to a sandwich, if fill it with healthy fillings like some scrambled egg whites and cheeses or meats.

Ingredients used to make Arepas recipes

  • 2 cups of pre-cooked cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 2 1/2 cups of lukewarm water
  • oil for pan-frying
  • Chipotle shredded chicken
  • Carnitas — personal fave
  • Magic green sauce or other sauce (umm, what other sauce would there be?)
  • black beans
  • sweet potatoes, sliced into thin pieces and sautéed in olive oil and salt
  • red onions
  • Cotija cheese


  • Precooked cornmeal is also known as arepa flour or harina precocida or masarepa. You can it from Amazon (online) or from your nearby market shop.


  • Now take a big bowl and mix the precooked cornmeal and the salt. Mix them well with help of a spoon by turning cornmeal and salt upside down.


  • Add the water to the bowl and mix it properly so with help of a whisker. Try to remove the lumps if ant formed. Stir it continuously.


  • After mixing properly keep the bowl aside and, let the mixture rest for around 5 to 10 minutes.


  • Our dough is prepared.


  • With help of your hands, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces.

  • With help of a roller roll each piece of dough into a ball shape and then gently press it to flatten to create a disk shape of about 1 inch thick.


  • Take a big fry pan, add some oil, and keep it on a gas stove. Heat it over a medium flame.


  • Add the arepas to the frying pan and fry for about 6 to 7 minutes on both sides.


  • The arepas should be dry-fried exterior without getting change in its colour.


  • After frying take it out on a towels/tissue paper and let it get cooled.


  • Cut the arepas in half and fill it with Chipotle shredded chicken carnitas, magic green sauce or other sauce, black beans, sweet potatoes, sliced into thin pieces and sautéed in olive oil, red onions, Cotija cheese, and salt
